Chavez, Messina, Powell, Fisher win May Eddys
We had a lot to brag about content-wise in May, and selecting Eddy winners was a challenge. But these four will go home with a gas card worth $50.
We had two News Eddy winners in May. Jon Chavez was selected for finding the attempted purchase of The Andersons within moments of a news release that was conveniently not sent to us. Jon noticed it late into his shift and stayed to put together a complete story for the next day’s paper. We had a more complete story online and in the newspaper than any other media, local or national. The second News Eddy goes to Ignazio Messina, who broke several stories off his beat in May, including a couple tied to a Southwyck deal that was never shared with council and was off the table before anyone else knew about it. Toledo’s mayor originally claimed no knowledge of the offer, but later clarified what she knew when. Ignazio also revealed a $188M cost overrun at the Collins Park water treatment facility. The mayor kept that news quiet since January.
Jackie Powell takes home the Desk Eddy for juggling a multitude of tasks, while covering for vacations, and for spotting a potential homicide as a cause of death on the coroners reports. Tom Fisher wins the Visual Eddy for a couple of creative illustrations for Sunday Business — one on how First Energy customers may foot the bill for extending the life of two aging power plants, including Davis-Besse, and the other on local CEO pay.
Nominations for June Eddy Awards can be made at anytime during the month, but they must be to Luann no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, June 30
