NEWS: Kate Snyder is recognized for both breaking and enterprise news during the month. She was on top of the arrests in the terrorism case, wrote about the lack of guns in the city’s Not in My House program, and talked to grieving family members for the year-end homicide story.
VISUAL: David Patch wins for training multiple photographers on how to use The Blade’s drone. In 2018, Dave became the first user of the new drone. In December, Andy Morrison became the second newsroom employee to pass the related test. Thanks Dave for the field training you’ve provided to others here. Expect to see additional operators of the drone in 2019.
DESK: Matt Swan for the skybox save of the month. He caught that an item about the Mud Hens was incorrectly paired with a Walleye logo. The mistake didn’t appear in any papers, but could have been a huge embarrassment. Matt is known as the copy desk jack-of-all-trades, often working as a paginator for the A, B, and C sections, in addition to regular duties as rimmer, wire editor, and late NewsSlide editor. No matter the day or the job, Matt does excellent work and is always willing to take on new tasks
DIGITAL: Andy Morrison identified the Christmas in Toledo phenomenon, The Christmas Weed. The story garnered national attention, and even made the Washington Post. This was an excellent example of social sourcing. He identified a story of interest on social media, and then social media did what social media does.
All winners will receive a $50 gas card.
