5 Eddy winners in May

Mark Monroe

SPECIAL TRAVEL EDDY
This is a one-time Eddy being given to Mark Monroe. Mark has been through some wild travel times in just a few weeks, including obtaining a passport, taking two trips to Tulsa, lost luggage, countless delays, lack of Internet while filing stories in airports, and an unexpected overnight in a Canadian city. Oh, and he’s back in St. John’s, Newfoundland for the second time. We thank Mark not only for the travel effort, but for all he’s done to cover the Walleye as the team continues to advance in the Kelly Cup Finals.

Alex Mester

NEWS EDDY
Alex Mester juggled several major stories in May, including the opening of the new museum at the Toledo Zoo and the sudden departure of the head of the Lucas County Canine Care and Control. Although county leaders tried to keep it quiet, and hassled her about her public records requests, Alex persisted and learned the dog warden was asked to resign. She also uncovered a video that showed two county employees handling dogs in a questionable manner, actions that are tied to the director’s departure.

Ashley Bastock

DIGITAL EDDY
This goes to digital team member and sports writer Ashley Bastock. Ashley was given several tips that she turned into nice pieces. She took a pretty cryptic email from a person claiming to have a ton of Walleye memorabilia in his home. It was unclear whether he even lived locally. Ashley learned he lived just over the state line, so she went to his home, and she shot her own video and photos. In that same spirit of Walleye, Ashley also wrote about a family with a Newfoundland-Toledo connection. In addition, Ashley worked over one evening to help fill in for an agate shift.

Abe Kobylanski

DESK EDDY
Abe Kobylanski is recognized for being an enthusiastic worker who eagerly accepts new challenges and job assignments. He has worked multiple jobs, including rim, wire editor, Second News designer, and Peach Plus paginator, which has bailed the desk out of jams more than once. Abe’s can-do attitude and work ethic make him an asset to the operation.

Rebecca Benson

VISUAL EDDY
Rebecca Benson has had a strong month, consistently producing excellent photo coverage of whatever she shoots. Examples include her chess club photo which was a picture of the week, both video and photo coverage on deadline of the UAW/Jeep rally at St. V’s, a vigil at Clay High School for the student who was killed in a crash, as well as strong coverage of track, softball, and baseball.
