5 win November Eddy Awards
NEWS EDDY
This goes to Sarah Elms for a series of strong work, tips, and investigations. Sarah called in on a day off to provide details about a city council meeting, which allowed us to break news of a mayoral vote even without her at the office. She also heard about the Start High School teacher-student altercation, again making us first with the story. Also in the month, she tackled the topic of universal preschool, wrote an investigative piece about controversy surrounding a county software contract, and also uncovered details about the link between Councilman Tyrone Riley and a nuisance house in the central city.
NEWS EDDY
Dave Barkholz also wins for his work writing front page, top-of-the-fold business stories for three consecutive days, all in response to planned cuts at GM. His pieces were in-depth and super local about the impact on Toledo. During that same week, he broke a story about Jeep launching a Wrangler hybrid this summer.
DESK EDDY
Alicia Balog is recognized for doing a remarkable job handling the Herculean task of designing the Giving Tuesday tab on short notice. That’s in addition to (and at the same time) as the very big Thanksgiving Day and weekend papers. Alicia’s great attitude and willingness to take on extra work makes her an invaluable part of the copy desk. Our readers don’t know her, but they see the results of her work every day.
VISUAL EDDY
Amy Voigt is recognized for hearing a four-alarm fire on the scanner and heading to the scene. It turned out to be an explosion, caused after a man was believed to have set himself on fire. Amy regularly provides information to the city desk, including this month when she called in some detail for a story about the sentencing of a former Monroe County judge.
DIGITAL EDDY
Joe Landsberger wins for his Blade NewsSlide graphics, along with his ability to multitask, including taking on some features production. In addition, Joe designed the front cover for the Giving Tuesday section this month.
Each winner receives a $50 gas card. Please submit your recommendations for December Eddys to Kim Bates by 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31.
