5 win October Eddy Awards
NEWS
Ryan Dunn wins in part for his role in producing the Anyana-Kai investigative piece. The story looked at a series of deaths, questionable practices, and even fictitious documents relating to the business and its owner. Ryan also handled the police beat when Kate Snyder was on vacation and followed the anti-jail group for months. This culminated in a fairly large story about them receiving a special election that will cost the county $240,000.
DESK EDDY
Jeff Schmucker wins for his efforts on the editing team, and especially for going out in the rain and waiting for three hours at the scene of what police thought was a standoff. Jeff assigned himself to do this on a late Saturday afternoon and while working a city desk editing shift. As it turned out, no one was in the building. Jeff kept us updated for the web and social media. In addition to filling in for Mike Walton when he’s away, Jeff also stands in regularly on Blade Briefings when reporters are unavailable.
VISUAL
Visual recognition goes to Tom Fisher. He stepped up to do the Walleye tab cover when our original idea fell through and knocked it out of the park. He also created multiple new graphics for the section that made it really stand out.
DIGITAL
Jeremy Schneider and Andy Cole are recognized in the digital category for transforming our Friday night football digital coverage. The live scoreboard leads sports content nearly every weekend of the regular football season. And the new top performers’ roundup was usually in the top three. Jeremy and Andy added multiple videos, hyperlinks, tweets, and more to provide a much more engaging user experience.
Each winner receives a $50 gas card. Submissions for the November Eddy Awards are due to Kim Bates by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30
