Linkhorn, Balog, Zapotosky win August Eddys
The nominations were deep, and the decisions to select only three August Eddy Award winners were tough.
The month included two quality series — a two-part series on heroin, and a Living feature and Magazine Page on the local transgender community. Both were strong contenders from a story-telling perspective and from a visual perspective. And all of the employees who worked on both projects are to be commended.
But a decision had to be made, so here are the Eddy winners for August:
Tryel Linkhorn
The News Eddy goes to Tyrel Linkhorn, for his exhaustive, and interesting, work not only for several stories in the 48-page tab on 75 years of Jeep but also for daily stories leading up to Jeep Fest, as well as covering the event itself. The quantity and variety of the stories was impressive, and so were the Web hits.
Alicia Balog
Alicia Balog receives the Desk Eddy. According to her coworkers, Alicia is great at catching misspellings, particularly in names, because she is a thorough fact-checker. During August, she caught major name discrepancies in multiple stories, from news to sports. One night she caught three bad names in one story. Not moments after that catch, she found two bad names in one photo cutline. She always handles these situations politely and maintains a cheerful demeanor.
We all know we had odd breaking news as August came to a close, with two murder-suicide situations. And breaking news and videos really drive our website.
Dave Zapotosky
So the Visual Eddy goes to Dave Zapotosky for his interview of the live-in girlfriend of the alleged shooter at the scene of a murder-suicide resulting from a neighborhood dispute in Springfield Township. One other person was also shot. After shooting his two neighbors, the suspect set their house on fire, before he turned the gun on himself. His girlfriend witnessed the attack. The shooter and the female victim died.
Each of our winners receives a $50 gas card.
Nominations for the September Eddy Awards can be made at any time, but must be submitted to Luann by noon Friday, Sept. 30.
