Style on doctors
Despite a momentary change in style, we have decided to reaffirm our previous, long-standing style: Dentists ARE NOT doctors.
Here is the official listing from The Blade Stylebook, which can be found under the TITLES section:
Professional titles:
Dr. is used ONLY for physicians, osteopaths, and veterinarians. Dr. should NOT be used for chiropractors, dentists, educators, members of the clergy, and others with doctorate degrees. On second reference, use Mr., Mrs., Miss, or Ms. DO NOT use Dr. If this person has an earned doctorate degree and it is a relevant element to the story, you can include this information. But DO NOT use the courtesy title Dr. [Updated 10/5/2016]
Fort – Do not abbreviate for cities or for military installations.
It should be Fort Wayne or Fort Lauderdale. Do not use Ft. Wayne or Ft. Lauderdale. Use Fort Bragg, not Ft. Bragg.
