2017 summer Yale interns
Antonia ‘Anna’ Ayres-Brown
Anna is a student at Yale University and is working as an intern at The Blade this summer.
During the school year, she studies International Human Rights and American Studies. She grew up in New Haven, Conn., and will be living on Collingwood Boulevard this summer, between the Old West End and Uptown.
Outside of class, she works as an editor for The New Journal, a long-form creative nonfiction magazine. Anna also edits Yale’s music magazine and has written for various on-campus and off-campus publications.
In the past, she has particularly enjoyed writing about crime, religion, and the arts. However, she is very excited to branch out this summer and help cover a broad range of subjects!
Anna enjoys singing and playing guitar during her free time. She also loves running, hiking, and spending time outdoors.

David Yaffe-Bellany
David is a junior at Yale University and a newsroom intern this summer at The Blade.
At school, David majors in English, although he also enjoys studying history and film. He grew up in central New Jersey and will live in the Old West End this summer.
Outside of class — and sometimes during lecture, when he’s on a tight deadline — David writes about the university president’s office for the Yale Daily News. He especially enjoys covering labor issues and campus politics.
An avid soccer fan, David played competitively in high school and got his start in journalism writing about soccer for various websites and magazines. He is often seen wearing the colors of Manchester United.
David’s email address is [email protected] and his work extension is 6050. Welcome, David.
Victorio Cabrera
Hi. I will be a senior at Yale majoring in political science. This summer, I’ll be a newsroom intern at The Blade.
I was born in Uruguay — ask me about its booming sheep and cattle industries — but I grew up in Greenville, S.C., a city which is mostly known for its architecturally unusual two-pole suspension bridge.
During my time at Yale, I have been managing editor of the Herald, a weekly, and am currently managing editor of the New Journal, a long-form literary nonfiction magazine about Yale and New Haven. Aside from campus journalism, I was also involved with the Urban Debate League of New Haven, which runs debate programs for New Haven public schools. In my spare time, I love to read, write, and run. After college, I’d like to to go to law school.
At The Blade, I’m most excited to develop the skills of daily-news reporting, which I haven’t gotten to do much of. I’m excited to live in and learn about Toledo. I’d like to report on the immigrant community and immigrant activism, anything to do with the law (crimes, courts, etc.), and public health.
Victorio’s email address is [email protected] and his work extension is 6050. Welcome to The Blade, Victorio.
Ahmed Elbenni
Ahmed is a student at Yale University and is working as an intern at The Blade this summer.
Although born in Egypt, he has spent most of his life in New York and central New Jersey. He is currently pursuing bachelor’s degrees in history and political science.
While on-campus, Ahmed reports for the school newspaper, the Yale Daily News, and its Magazine and Weekend branches, the latter of which specialize in longer creative and reported nonfiction pieces. He also is an associate editor at The Yale Politic and an online editor for the The Yale Globalist. Aside campus publications, Ahmed has written for College Cultured, an online guidance counseling blog for high school and college students.
While Ahmed has tended to focus his writing on religion, politics, and science, he enjoys exploring new topics and believes such adventuring is one of the most essential (and most enjoyable) part of the journalistic experience.
Aside from reading books, Ahmed spends his free time playing table tennis and soccer. He also loves taking pictures of the outdoors (with his iPhone, because he’s not a professional photographer even if he likes to imagine otherwise). In addition, he dabbles in video editing and stop-motion animation.
Ahmed’s Blade email is [email protected] and his work extension is 6050. Welcome, Ahmed.
Jacob Stern
Jacob is a junior at Yale University and a newsroom intern this summer.
At Yale, he studies philosophy and English, with a focus on Modernist literature. He has lived his whole life in Washington and will be staying in the Old West End while writing for The Blade.
Outside of class, Jacob covers state politics for the Yale Daily News and serves as an associate editor for the YDN Magazine, which publishes long-form journalism, creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. His favorite pieces to write have been in-depth profiles.
He also plays for the Yale men’s club soccer team, is on the board of the Yale Film Society, and volunteers for an on-campus organization that helps people search for housing and apply for jobs.
An avid sports fan, Jacob follows the NBA, the NHL, the MLB, and various European soccer leagues.
Jacob’s email address is [email protected] and his work extension is 6050. Welcome, Jacob.
