Newsroom management changes
I’d like to announce changes to the newsroom management team that will enhance our digital presence and strengthen the creation of quality journalism to serve our readers and grow our online audiences.
Kim Bates is Assistant Managing Editor/News and Features, overseeing the city desk, business desk, and features. She also will be responsible for some of the administrative duties of the newsroom, including personnel issues, recruiting new talent, pool cars, and the library. Kim is a proven newsroom leader who over the past two decades has led efforts to produce award-winning journalism at The Blade. I know she will continue to do that in this new role.
Larry Graham is Assistant Managing Editor/Digital and Visual. He will be responsible for overseeing the staffs of toledoblade.com and Blade NewsSlide, as well as the photography and graphic arts staffs. Larry has been a catalyst for changing the newsroom to a more digitally-focused team to meet the aggressive goals of Blade NewsSlide. In his new role, he will continue to push for that change and better integrate photography and graphics arts into that process.
Mike Walton is the new City Editor, overseeing the city desk, business desk, and our reporting in the suburbs and the region. In the short time Mike has been on staff he has shown he can lead, collaborate, think digitally, and balance the demands of our print and digital platforms.
Greg Braknis will remain News Editor, but is taking on added administrative duties including budgeting for the editorial department and overseeing overtime usage, expense reports, and travel requests.
Sports and copy desk operations will report directly to me.
We will need to fill the Night City Editor post and we will take applications soon. Please forward the applications to Kim Bates.
