John Besche

John Besche

John is a summer reporting intern originally from the Washington, D.C. area.

John is an incoming senior at Yale University, where he is double majoring in Religious Studies and Urban Studies — with an intensive focus on Russian and Portuguese. He is a first-generation college student and a QuestBridge scholar.

Aside from writing about great sidewalks and the great beyond, he spent much of his time in college reporting for the Yale Daily News where he covered Graduate and Professional schools. His proudest piece at the YDN — a long-form investigative piece on the Church of Scientology’s fraudulent tax practices — combined his interests in religion and public life, urban planning, and the city of New Haven, Connecticut. He said that reporting from the back of a Scientology fund-raiser, headlined by a Sonny and Cher cover band, was the moment he knew he wanted to become a journalist.

During the pandemic, John spent 14 consecutive months in New Haven, cultivating a variety of skills, including but not limited to quad roller skating, building furniture, and dyeing his own hair, all to varying degrees of success. He also made a concerted effort to watch every Classical Hollywood film ever made.

Prior to college, John worked at a Japanese grocery store called Hinata (consistently named among the best sushi in the DC area, might he add) and he is prepared to revisit his sushi-making skills during his time in Toledo.

John has never spent time in the Midwest before, and he is very much looking forward to exploring a new part of the country while getting to know the Glass City inside and out. Please send him recommendations for bike trips, cheap eats, and local cinema.

Madison is a summer reporting intern from the Chicagoland area.

She is an incoming sophomore at Yale University and returning from a gap year where she interned for Lilith Magazine and the New Haven Independent, while also freelancing for various other publications. Her major is (and will likely remain for the near future) undecided.

When enrolled, Madison is a staff reporter covering faculty and academics for the Yale Daily News, Senior Editor for the New Journal, and involved with Jewish life on campus. Currently, she also is the Business Manager for Magevet, which is Yale’s Jewish, Hebrew, and Israeli a cappella group.

Madison’s previous stories include a feature on the plight of instructional faculty at Yale, profiles of professors with large Twitter followings, an essay on ableism in synagogues, and a series on eviction court proceedings in New Haven.

She looks forward to learning more about journalism (and Toledo) this summer.

Macrina is a summer reporting intern from Singapore.

She is an incoming senior at Yale University, where she is double majoring in English and Political Science. Academically, she is passionate about post-colonial literature, data governance, and political extremism.

In college, she has reported for multiple publications, including the Yale Daily News, The Yale Herald and The New Journal, writing about a range of topics from immigration policy to sexual misconduct on college campuses. She is currently the editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News Magazine, a long-form journalistic publication, and has found that she loves editing as much as reporting.

Beyond journalism, she writes and performs sketch comedy with her ensemble and delivers tours of the Yale Center for British Art as a student guide. She loves pop culture, biking, and board games.
