Congrats to state journalism winners

Two Ohio journalism contests were announced recently, and The Blade’s special section for the April 8 eclipse took awards in both contests.

In the contest for the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, released July 7, judges gave The Blade staff first place for Best Special Section: Frogtown readies for Eclipse 2024.

Here is what the judges had to say about it:

“I was drawn to this section by its fascinating graphics (I love the frog cover), variety of story topics, captivating photos, and presentation of information and humor. The section provides an explanation and history of eclipses, in addition to coverage of what is happening in the area on the big day.”

(We also give Mike Purdy another big thanks as the idea of focusing on frogs was his.)

Joe Landsberger won first place for his related special section design “Inside the Eclipse,” which judges said was a powerful graphic design that was visually interesting, informative, and easy to read and digest.

Jeremy Wadsworth also received a first place for best photographer.

Also being named in the Ohio SPJ contest were:

Jim Trumm, second place for business/consumer reporting.

Jim Trumm and Debbie Rogers, second place for best government/political reporting.

Sarah Readdean, second place for religion writing.

Kim Wynn, second place for science, medical, health reporting.

The Ohio SPJ awards ceremony is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 in Columbus. Please let us know if you would like to attend.
