Investigative Editing Corps selects Blade for reporting project
We recently learned that we have been awarded a project relationship with the Investigative Editing Corps, a group that pairs seasoned editors with newsrooms.
We submitted an idea to them for a housing project pre-coronavirus, but now that project also will have ties to the virus. The exact focus is being determined.
The group is providing a two-time Pulitzer-winning editor to us for at least the summer months.
She is Deborah Nelson, who currently teaches investigative journalism at the University of Maryland. She was an investigations editor for the Los Angeles Times and she’s also worked at the Washington Post, the Seattle Times, and the Chicago Sun-Times.
One of Deb’s Pulitzer projects dealt with problems in the government’s Indian Housing Program.
Our team members are Sarah Elms, Brooks Sutherland, Danielle Gamble, and Amy Voigt. They will speak regularly with Deb and other Blade editors about the project’s progress.
Sarah and Brooks did the bulk of housing-type stories earlier this year and they already have many ideas for this project. We credit Danielle with the idea to apply. Danielle previously worked with the group when she was the city editor at the Olean Times Herald.
