July 2018 Eddy Award winners
We have five winners for the month of July in two categories — news and visual.
For the News Eddy, we recognize Allison Dunn, Mark Zaborney, and David Briggs.
Allison had a very busy couple of weeks on the police beat, and she’s handled the demands at top speed. During the month, she asked tough questions of the mayor’s administration about the process used for selecting a new fire chief.
She covered tons of breaking news, including two officer-involved shootings.
And she shot a Facebook Live at a scene where residents and officers were overcome by drugs, causing one Toledo police officer to administer naloxone to herself.
Mark wins for his strong ability to signal breaking news based off of initial scanner reports.
In just the period of a week, he alerted the newsroom twice to what sounded like officer-involved shootings.
One was late on a Saturday night. The other was late on a Friday afternoon.
David is recognized for some of his recent columns.
The one on Urban Meyer returning to talk about Bowling Green did really well digitally.
In addition the Zach Smith column on his domestic violence allegations was a strong stance that no one else on the beat really had, and the story on the Perrysburg weightlifter also was very well done.
In the Visual category, we honor Jeff Basting and Tom Fisher.
They are commended for their baseball diamond graphics in the July 8 issue.
On a tight deadline and during a holiday week, Jeff and Tom produced a two-page graphic for the paper that was informative and unique to the paper.
Each winner receives a $50 gas card. Nominations for the August Eddy Awards can be submitted to Kim at any time. The deadline for recommendations is 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.
