Meet 2024 intern Maggie Grether

Maggie hails from Pasadena, Calif., where she was born and raised. She now attends Yale University, pursuing degrees in history and comparative literature. Beyond Pasadena and New Haven, Maggie has also spent time living in Seoul, South Korea.

Maggie’s interest in journalism sparked when she joined her high school newspaper. At Yale, she was a housing and homelessness beat reporter for the Yale Daily News, covering issues like landlord neglect, tenant unionization, and homeless services funding in New Haven and broader Connecticut. Now, she serves as editor-in-chief of the magazine The New Journal, a student publication about Yale and New Haven which publishes longform journalism about the relationship between the university and the city. This year, Maggie will also be writing about housing instability for The Nation, as a Puffin Writing Fellow.

Before leaving home for college, Maggie took a gap year where she worked making desserts for a catering company and studied abroad in Korea. She loves cooking, listening to live music, and visiting new cities. This is her first time in Ohio, and she is excited to explore everything Toledo and The Blade have to offer.
