Meet Elena Saavedra Buckley

After a rainy Thanksgiving with my college roommate last year, this summer is my second time in Toledo. I’m one of the interns from Yale, where I’m a rising junior in the Humanities program.

I’m excited to flex my daily news writing/reporting muscles while at The Blade and will likely be asking a lot of questions. I’m interested in writing about people, arts, housing, and education, and I hope to work on some features and longer-term projects while here.

Before coming to The Blade, I worked mostly in music radio — with WNYC’s classical station and NPR Music — and learned about newsrooms and headphone hair. At school, I’m currently one of the editors-in-chief of The New Journal, a creative nonfiction magazine about Yale and New Haven. We publish five times a year, and content ranges from investigative features on fake IDs to short pieces about a funeral home’s newly released iPhone app.

I’m originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where my family lives in the North Valley by the river. I played piano, accordion, and volleyball growing up and, thankfully, got to spend some beautiful, sunscreened time outside. (Let me know if you have any favorite shady locations in Toledo to do some walking.)

I’m living at the edge of the Old West End this summer, a few blocks from Black Kite. I’ll be looking out for music, art, and good coffee in my off time, and everyone’s invited to my unfurnished apartment to sit on my air mattress couch.
