September 2020 Eddy Award winners
Rebecca Benson wins the Photo Eddy for her very strong photography during the search for missing Braylen Noble. On the day Braylen’s body was found in a pool where he lived, Rebecca thought to shoot the scene from above and within an individual’s apartment. Rebecca took great initiative in doing this:
Brooks Sutherland is recognized with the News Eddy for his interview with Judith Richards Hope, which took place the day after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died. Brooks had the idea to track down Ms. Hope, a Defiance native and attorney. Justice Ginsburg tried to help Ms. Hope on her career path, even though the two were political opposites. Brooks ended his piece with this quote. “She was like the North Star,” Ms. Hope said. “You could set your compass by her. You could say she did it, so I can do it.”
Another News Eddy goes to Jeff Schmucker for his coverage in recent months of the presidential search and budget constraints at the University of Toledo. Jeff has done a stellar job staying on top of this and pushing the university for answers. He also was the first to report that UT was hiring its interim president. Jeff has done this while juggling other responsibilities, such as Peach Plus and theater columns.
The Digital Eddy this month goes to Andy Cole, Mark Monroe, and Steve Junga. While so many are deserving of praise for how sports coverage changed this fall, we are recognizing these three for their particular efforts. Steve and Mark took on new roles of writing multiple game stories on Friday nights, and Andy has tracked reporters’ Twitter feeds and their direct updates to help keep our sites current.
Jen Lyon receives the Desk Eddy for her hand at writing breaking news and largely weekend news. Jen, who manages our digital products on most Saturday and Sunday days, often handles early releases. She also regularly watches Sunday morning shows, producing our own content from these.
