November Eddy Award winners
Food dominated this month. And with three reporters involved in producing a pre-Ohio State-University of Michigan game-day piece, we’re doing things a little differently.
We have four winners, but in just two categories.
Three reporters, Mary Bilyeu, Kyle Rowland, and Matt Markey, receive the News Eddy for their involvement in Mary’s food page. It provided game-day favorites for the Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh families.
Mary was aided in this effort by sports colleagues Matt and Kyle, which shows a nice collaboration between the sports and features departments. Matt, who knows Urban and Shelley Meyer, was able to get two recipes fairly quickly. Kyle called on the UM side, and he received two recipes just before the clock ran out. The end result was an interesting mix of fare such as pepperoni bread and crab dip that remain popular with these families.
Mark Monroe wins the Desk Eddy. He does two beats, high school sports and the Walleye, and did a great job on each this month. In addition to covering high school football every Friday night and writing multiple game previews each week, he did half of the high school basketball previews, which entailed six pieces of 60-plus inches.
When it comes to the Walleye, he’s done weekly Wall-to-Wall feature stories, covered games, and broke the news recently that team captain Alden Hirschfeld of Sylvania would be out for the year because of knee surgery.
Congrats to all and thanks for the hard work. Each receives a $50 gas card.
Nominations for December Eddy awards can be made at any time during the month but must be to Kim Bates by noon on Jan. 2, a delay only because of the holiday.
