May 2018 Eddy Award winners
NEWS EDDY
Sarah Elms wins for her water coverage that culminated in two excellent stories, one being a thorough explainer on the water plant’s history and the other a detailed piece of enterprise regarding minimum use charges.
Also, her reporting of the Savage Park splash pad ensured it would open this summer.
Matt Markey did a ton to organize and produce the birding content, which turned into a successful and in-depth extensive project that included just about every corner of the newsroom.
That was in addition to producing his usual weekly content including the weekly Fishing Report, a Mag page, and his Memorial Day column.
DESK EDDY
Matt Swan is a hard working copy editor who fills many roles, doing copy editing and pagination of the A and B and C sections, and also a nighttime Blade NewsSlide late person.
Plus, he checked one night on a Business Brief he was copy editing and found that an auction had occurred and the winner was Spangler Candy Co., something that otherwise would not have been in the paper the next day. He also pitched in and wrote a crime brief for city desk on Sunday night.
VISUAL EDDY
Katie Rausch was a big help with two major packages.
She captured all of the photos for the College Bound series and did the video on Cole Ragan, plus, at a moment’s notice, she shot photos and video for the Goaldiggers story.
DIGITAL EDDY
Scott Albert is off to a fantastic start designing NewsSlide. He’s shown tremendous creativity when it comes to presentation.
He added a touch of personality to the College Bound series and is applying that same flare to NewsSlide’s mobile layouts.
All winners receive a $50 gift card and tickets to Cedar Point. Nominations for the June Eddy Awards are due to Kim Bates no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, June 29.
