June Eddy Award winners
NEWS EDDY
Nicki Gorny wins for a series of different religion pieces she’s tackled recently. Just this month, she took a look at the issue of secular humanists and how they find a community without theism. She also worked on a story about dating in the #MeToo movement.
Nicki is really bringing a different touch and different topics to the paper.
DESK EDDY
Bill Piotrowski is awarded for excellence in the sports slot, being calm under pressure, and making deadline nearly every night. Bill’s handling of the sports staff and reporters helps the desk put out a great product for our readers, improves page flow, and gets the latest news in, even with only minutes to spare.
Bill is always eager to take on extra tasks or do anything to get the job done. That can-do attitude is always appreciated.
DIGITAL EDDY
Jimmy Miller was crucial in creating our Breaking News protocols and Breaking News kits. He’ll be offering training on the kits in the near future. He’s also written some of NewsSlide’s more outside-the-box content, such as the pumpkin pie recipe billboard battle story, and the Toledoan who netted a hammerhead shark on vacation.
Jimmy has done this while still designing NewsSlide editions and manning the web desk.
VISUAL EDDY
Jeremy Wadsworth is recognized for his consistently excellent sports photography, especially coverage of high school state track and state baseball championships in Columbus where he shot both on the same day.
In addition, he quickly made us aware that there was a state champion in track, Katelyn Meyer of Eastwood.
All winners receive a $50 gas card. Nominations for July Eddys can be submitted anytime to Kim Bates, but the deadline is 5 p.m. on July 31.
